Apple launches Tap to Pay Down Under

Apple has made a significant move to enhance the payment experience for its users by recently launching Tap to Pay in Australia

This expansion brings the convenience and security of contactless payments to millions of customers across the country, empowering businesses of any size to accept friction free contactless payments using only an iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app.

This launch brings a new level of accessibility, revolutionising the way payments are made. With a simple tap of their iPhones, users can securely complete transactions, making payment processes faster and more streamlined. For our clients using the Retail Super-App, this enhances the seamless customer experience we provide.

Once enabled, merchants will simply prompt customers to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay with Apple Pay, their contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology.

Apple has built a reputation for prioritising security and privacy in its products and services, and Tap to Pay is no exception.

When a user adds their credit or debit card to Apple Pay, the card number isn’t stored on the device or Apple’s servers. Instead, a unique device account number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the iPhone’s Secure Element. This ensures that sensitive payment information is never shared during a transaction, reducing the risk of fraud or identity theft.

One of the significant advantages of this launch is its compatibility with existing payment infrastructure. By leveraging near-field communication (NFC) technology, the same technology used by contactless cards, Tap to Pay seamlessly integrates with existing payment terminals across Australia.

This presents many benefits for our clients using the Retail Super-App, a major one being the enablement of endless aisle without the need to replace existing POS systems. Our ability to quickly and easily integrate into a retailers existing eCommerce or POS system means the impact on existing systems is low, resulting in a low risk and high reward project.

“The convenience of Tap to Pay on iPhone empowers Australian businesses to offer easy, secure, and private contactless payment experiences to their customers, and help them run and grow their business.” – Jennifer Bailey, VP of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet

The Retail Super-App transforms how and where customers connect and transact. The launch of Tap to Pay in the US and now Australia means we can provide our clients with effortless payments, enhancing the already exceptional customer experience.
